An integrated symposium, with an esteemed panel of experts, discussed the burden and treatment approaches for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). The session took place on 17th April 2023 as part 33rd European Congress Clinical Microbiology Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) in Copenhagen, Denmark. was co-chaired by Mark Wilcox, Head Research & Development Infection Lead at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, UK, Professor Medical University Leeds, UK; Anne Gonzales-Luna, Assistant Houston College Pharmacy, Texas, USA. Sarah Tschudin-Sutter, Division Hospital Epidemiology Basel, Switzerland, explored changing landscape CDI, including epidemiology surveillance infection, to diagnosis. John Coia, Emeritus Institute Regional Health Research, South Denmark, Honorary Fellow Glasgow University, Esther Calbo, Disease Universitari Mútua de Terrassa, Spain, gave overview recurrent dysbiosis role mortality risk, importance targeting recurrence. Calbo also presented interactive case study that allowed audience members engage review patient presented. faculty how approach assessment achieve best outcome case. Clostridioides difficile Biology: Sporulation, Germination, and Corresponding Therapies for C. difficile Infection

Clostridioides difficile is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, toxin-producing anaerobe, and an important nosocomial pathogen. Due to the strictly anaerobic nature of the vegetative form, spores are the main morphotype of infection and transmission of the disease. Spore formation and their subsequent germination play critical roles in C. difficile infection (CDI) progress. Under suitable condition...

Community-acquired Clostridium difficile infection: an increasing public health threat

There has been a startling shift in the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infection over the last decade worldwide, and it is now increasingly recognized as a cause of diarrhea in the community. Classically considered a hospital-acquired infection, it has now emerged in populations previously considered to be low-risk and lacking the traditional risk factors for C. difficile infection, such...

Topological Data Analysis of Clostridioides difficile Infection and Fecal Microbiota Transplantation

Computational topologists recently developed a method, called persistent homology to analyze data presented in terms of similarity or dissimilarity. Indeed, persistent homology studies the evolution of topological features in terms of a single index, and is able to capture higher order features beyond the usual clustering techniques. There are three descriptive statistics of persistent homology...

Gut bacterial communities of diarrheic patients with indications of Clostridioides difficile infection

We present bacterial 16S rRNA gene datasets derived from stool samples of 44 patients with diarrhea indicative of a Clostridioides difficile infection. For 20 of these patients, C. difficile infection was confirmed by clinical evidence. Stool samples from patients originating from Germany, Ghana, and Indonesia were taken and subjected to DNA isolation. DNA isolations of stool samples from 35 as...

Targeting Persistent Human Papillomavirus Infection

While the majority of Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are transient and cleared within a couple of years following exposure, 10-20% of infections persist latently, leading to disease progression and, ultimately, various forms of invasive cancer. Despite the clinical efficiency of recently developed multivalent prophylactic HPV vaccines, these preventive measures are not effective against ...
